Category A Hydrographic Surveying
IHO Category B Graduate
A graduate of an IHO accredited Category B course will have completed a substantial proportion of the theory topics required for the Category A course - despite this, for the Category A course most of these need to be covered at a higher level. The Otago program has not been designed as a 'top up program' for Category B graduates. Therefore, there will be some repetition of subject material within the papers, but then the subject matter will be taken to the necessary higher level.
However, a number of the lower level papers can be granted exemption on the basis of a Category B course and experience. Please note that some Category B accredited programs do go further than the minimum Category B requirements, and therefore the level of repetition can vary. Other papers may be granted exemption based on other studies (for example as part of a Bachelor of Science degree, or other professional qualifications). Each student should therefore seek advice from the School early in the year prior to intended study.
