Category A Hydrographic Surveying

What is IHO Category A?

Category A is a term used by the International Hydrographic Organization (IHO), International Federation of Surveyors (FIG), and International Cartographic Association (ICA), to denote its most advanced standard of training and field competence in hydrographic surveying. There is also a second standard, called Category B. Courses with this accreditation are mainly aimed at the technician level, personnel who will be supervised by someone holding a Category A accredited qualification. . Category A has been used loosely to denote professional qualification as an hydrographic surveyor, however, Category A applies to education providers (the approved course) and not to individuals.

The IHO/FIG/ICA states that a Category A Programme in Hydrographic Surveying is one that provides a comprehensive and broad-based knowledge in all aspects of the theory and practice of hydrographic surveying and allied disciplines for individuals who will practice analytical reasoning, decision-making and development of solutions to non-routine problems. Individuals can be certified as a Level 1 Hydrographic Surveyor after graduation from the course and a requisite amount of practical experience (see Professional Certification).

The University of Otago first received accreditation for its Hydrographic Surveying programme at Category A level in 2003, and received reaccreditation in 2008. It remains the only course in Australasia for civilian students to have IHO/FIG/ICA Accreditation.
