Category A Hydrographic Surveying

Offshore Construction

The marine industrial sector is growing very rapidly demanding a large variety of tasks of which the hydrographic surveyor is a specialist. A large part of offshore activity involves the production side of oil and gas development. Hydrographic surveyors are often responsible for positioning drilling rigs and offshore production platforms. Pipeline construction and inspection are closely related activities. Undersea cable installation is yet another branch of offshore industry requiring the skills of a hydrographic surveyor. Hydrographic surveyors from New Zealand played an important role in the construction (reclamation) of the new airport serving Hong Kong. Today's offshore construction surveyor would expect to work with remotely operated vehicles or autonomous underwater vehicles and a part of their training will concern the positioning and operation of these technologically advanced machines.
