Category A Hydrographic Surveying
Port Management and Coastal Engineering
Nowhere is hydrography more critical than in harbours and other coastal and inland waterways. The responsibility for providing safe approaches to ports, and for safe berths and anchorages is usually the duty of port surveyors. Employed by government and by private port companies the hydrographic surveyor estimates dredge quantities and performs post-dredging and monitoring surveys. Using state of the art positioning and other spatial technology (i.e. computing systems) the hydrographer can be involved in a wide range of coastal zone management activities. Examples are: real-time under-keel clearance trials (using precise vertical positioning and tidal monitoring to improve the accessibility of ports), improvements in navigation techniques including electronic charts and remote communications; environmental monitoring, and construction of all kinds.
