Captain Turner gained his Second Mate's certificate at Liverpool Polytechnic, First Mate's certificate at Wellington Nautical School and Master Foreign Going certificate at Auckland Nautical School. His work experience includes serving as deck officer on foreign going cargo vessels out of UK and New Zealand, and as skipper of fishing vessels and research vessels out of New Zealand. He has made a particular study of maritime education, and gained the National Diploma in Educational Administration at Christchurch College of Education.
On coming ashore, Captain Turner was appointed senior lecturer in seamanship, navigation and fisheries technology at Otago Polytechnic and is now a maritime consultant based in Dunedin. He is recognised and accredited as an examiner of seagoing officers by the Maritime Safety Authority of New Zealand, and by the Maritime Industry Training Organisation. He specialises in distance learning for the skippers and crew of small coastal vessels and fishing boats. He now serves at sea, on a part time basis, as a skipper in the maritime tourism industry.
