Profile

Scott completed a BSc in Mathematics in Adelaide and briefly worked at the Australian Defence Science and Technology Organisation before joining the Royal Australian Navy in 1996. He completed Seaman Officer training in Bridge Watchkeeping and Navigation, including time on Patrol Boats in Northern Australian Waters. Scott then undertook IHO Category B Hydrographic Surveyor training in Sydney in 1999, before working on Navy survey ships in Northern Australia and Papua New Guinea. Scott was the Executive Officer of the survey ship HMAS Paluma conducting harbor and beach surveys in East Timor in support of United Nations forces during 2000.

After gaining qualifications and experience in Mine Warfare, Scott joined the staff of the RAN Hydrographic School in Sydney in 2002 for four years, including a period as the Officer in Charge. This time was spent teaching the IHO Category B course, as well as short courses for Navigators, Clearance Divers and Mine Warfare specialists. During this period he completed a MEngSci specialising in Surveying and Spatial Information Systems at the University of New South Wales. Scott then undertook studies with the Royal Navy at IHO Category A level in 2006 in Plymouth, UK, before returning to sea for further surveying in Northern Australian Waters, which included implementing CARIS HIPS and SIPS software into the Australian Hydrographic Service. After briefly returning to the RAN Hydrographic School in early 2008, Scott left the RAN with the rank of Lieutenant Commander to join the School of Surveying as a Professional Practice Fellow. He has subsequently gained Accreditation as a Level 1 Hydrographic Surveyor. Scott's interests are in multibeam surveying, tidal measurements, motion sensing, error analysis and seafloor classification.

Scott is the Coordinator for the IHO Category A Hydrographic Surveying Program, and maintains close liaison with the Nautical Studies section.
