Field Camps

The School of Surveying runs three field camps each year for students enrolled in the Bachelor of Surveying degree.

SURV 298 Introductory Surveying Field Camp

This camps is run over three weeks in February each year. It gives students an excellent grounding in a range of field exercises and equipment. The first week of the camp is held in Dunedin. For the second week the camp is relocated to Otematata in the Waitaki Valley. Students and staff are accommodated at the Otematata Camp Ground in a dormitory style facility. In addition to improving field skills and basic survey knowledge, the students get to know each other and the staff involved in the camp. Many life long friendships and associations are formed during this week.

SURV 299 Road Design Field Camp

This camp is held in the last week of October after exams. During the camp students spend time in the field setting out a road, and time in the computer lab designing a basic road using one of the Surveying/Engineering software packages.

SURV 399 Control Survey Camp

This camp is scheduled for four weeks in November. The camp is for students who have completed SURV 311 course work. It is project-based with the students working in groups to complete a number of precise field exercises. The results of the field exercises are processed by each student in the computer lab and each student is required to produce a comprehensive report of the field work, including their data processing procedures and results.
